_
Date: November 7, 2011
Project Name: UF-AFO
Group Number: 11
Group Members: Alessandra Hruschka, Gina Maliekal and Bryce Miller
Current status of project:
Trying to finalize design and work on indicator.
Work completed in the last week:
Came up with indicator designs.
Work planned for next week:
Looking into CAD drawings and material selection for final design of Racks and Pinion and making specifications with numbers and finalizing indicator design addition.
Anything needed from mentor/client or TA or instructor to continue work:
We are planning on continuing with our racks and pinion gear system. We have been conducting searches to see what off the shelf gears exist on the market, but presently we are considering the possibility of designing our own (racks and spur) gears that would be produced by a manufacturer.

- Would pursuing a customized gear be a good use of our time? Show appropriate effort?
- The indicator is a primarily mechanical solution. We are confident in the design, but would you prefer to see an appendix with multiple possibilities and a selection process (such as another Pugh chart) for this new addition?? (essentially, produce material as it would have been had it been an included component of Phase2)
- Is addition of an indicator at the upper ankle for proper shin strap adjustment sufficient to bring the potential for the final paper up to an ‘A’?

Date: October 24, 2011
Project Name: UF-AFO
Group Number: 11
Group Members: Alessandra Hruschka, Gina Maliekal and Bryce Miller
Current status of project:
Group is completing the Progress Report.
Work completed in the last week:
Group narrowed an initial list of twelve design alternatives down to a single design concept to be used for the third phase of the course. Selection was done in a multi-stage process involving initial qualitative analysis followed by Pugh Charts. The final design was then described in great qualitative detail.
Work planned for next week:
Finalizing the Progress Report for submission on Wednesday.
Anything needed from mentor/client or TA or instructor to continue work: Plan to review Progress Report with Dr. Thoroughman at weekly meeting on Tuesday.

Weekly Report #6
Date: October 17, 2011
Project Name: UFAFO
Group Number: 11
Group Members: Alessandra Hruschka, Gina Maliekal and Bryce Miller
Current status of project:
New design focus and trying to work on Concept Generation
Work completed in the last week:
Concept generation and reworking the scope and design specifications.
Our design will focus on innovating a fastening device to hold an ankle-foot orthotic in the prescribed position. The device will reduce user error and provide relative ease of donning and doffing the orthotic.
New Specs:
· easily used one-handed, left or right
· strong enough to prevent mechanical failure at maximal loading
· minimize space occupied by device (easy to fit in shoe, doesn’t catch when donning/doffing)
· maintains (or decreases) cost when compared with current fastening systems (i.e. velcro straps)
Work planned for next week:
Fleshing out concepts and figuring out mathematical analysis for phase II and picking a concept to continue with.
Anything needed from mentor/client or TA or instructor to continue work: We have changed our scope and design specifications and are now wondering if there needs to be mathematical analysis done to justify the effect of user error or can we use the assumption that user error is a significant hindrance for AFO function? In the latter case, we would then focus on the mathematical analysis of the strap and if it meets the new design specifications.
